The naturalist worldview is a good way to feel grounded and feel part of something that isn’t based on fairy tales. It’s based on observable facts in the human and in the biological history of the planet. I think that can be a source for comfort.

Some fairy tales end with the girl marrying the prince… some start there.
The unrealistic nature of these tales (which narrowminded rationalists object to) is an important device, because it makes obvious that the fairy tales’ concern is not useful information about the external world, but the inner process taking place in an individual.
To portray an iconic character has been brilliant in itself, and to be able to do that on a show like ‘Once Upon a Time’ enhances that because the show puts a spin on characters and makes them very different and puts core values that are very different that aren’t in the original fairy tales a lot of people relate to.
We’re all just big kids. That’s all we are. We are artistes. We grew up wanting to be part of the fantasy of the fairy tales and the stories.
Hersesy is denying the word of God, and the word of God is much more reliably expressed in the natural world as it’s revealed through reason and science than in what I have heard described wonderfully as “the giant book of Jewish fairy stories”.
If somebody had told me when I was starting composition in Helsinki in the ’70s that I would end up in L.A. and to describe that journey, those 17 years with the philharmonic and building the hall and this and that, I would have said, “This is a fairy tale of the first order.”

Snow White has always been one of my favorite fairy tales growing up. To be able to say, “I’m going to be Snow White” – it’s crazy. It’s an honor.
Does a man of sense run after every silly tale of hobgoblins or fairies, and canvass particularly the evidence? I never knew anyone, that examined and deliberated about nonsense who did not believe it before the end of his enquiries.
Life is a fairy tale. Live it with wonder and amazement.
Atheism is a fairy story for people afraid of the Light.
To me, a fairy tale seems to have become reality.
A lady with whom I was riding in the forest said to me that the woods always seemed to her to wait, as if the genii who inhabit them suspend their deeds until the wayfarer had passed onward; a thought which poetry has celebrated in the dance of the fairies, which breaks off on the approach of human feet.
Only the fairy tale equates changelessness with happiness…Permanence means paralysis and death. Only, in movement, with all its pain, is life.

I’m not a big fan of kids’ movies that have this knowing snarkiness to them or this post-modern take on storytelling. I think that sails right over the heads of most kids. There’s something to be said for a well-told fairy tale. There’s a reason that these mythic stories stay with us.
Do we believe that there is equal economic opportunity out there in the real world, right now, for each and every one of these groups? If we believed in the tooth fairy, if we believed in the Easter Bunny, we might well believe that.

In hopes to ken their fortune,
By freets that night.

I love monsters, I love creatures, I love beings, I love aliens. That’s more supernatural and more the stuff of fairy tales. Fairy tales are as ancient as we are. I love those stories. I think they’re really interesting because they always have more than simply the fright aspect. There’s something deeply psychological.

labels can be fun! Some people are like, “As a card-carrying bear, where I also have a little bit of fairy in me…” People have fun collaging these; there’s a fun people have with their identifications. The irony of them can be lost if you’re just wholeheartedly anti-identitarian.

the association of children and fairy-stories is an accident of our domestic history. Sometimes, violent details have been eliminated from fairy tales simply because they were deemed too graphic. There’s no way to explain to a child that the line between good and evil isn’t nearly as black and white as a fairy tale would lead you to believe. That an ordinary person can turn into a villain, under the right circumstances. That sometimes we dragon slayers do things we aren’t proud of.
I believe that authors don’t have a responsibility to include “messages” in their work, but they do have a responsibility to write a world that seems true and real, never more than when expecting readers to believe in magic and angels and fairies.

The spark for ‘In Praise of Slowness’ came when I began reading to my children. Every parent knows that kids like their bedtime stories read at a gentle, meandering pace.
