A lot of players might be tired, but I feel nice and sharp.
People go on about my style of play. But I tell you what I do – I go into football clubs, I try to find out what systems suit the players and I try to get the damnedest out of those players. That’s what I’ve done everywhere I’ve been.
Always, as a coach, you have to be thinking not to flood the players with information. You have to think what’s key for the player, for that team, and how do we deliver it in a way that it might stick and have an effect.
Rugby is great. The players don’t wear helmets or padding; they just beat the living daylights out of each other and then go for a beer. I love that.
Because I select my players from a feeling that comes to me when I am with them, a certain sympathy you might call it, or a vibration that exists between us that convinces me they are right.
All us players do that – looking to play, to fight for a place.
I think the players win the championship, and the organization has something to do with it, don’t get me wrong. But don’t try to put the organization above the players.
When you go out on a football field, you are responsible for taking care of yourself. The more rules you get, the less players truly take care of themselves.
You have to consistently be successful to be one of the top players in the world, and everything is possible in life.
That’s my hunger. If I start to relax, and I lose that, then I had better stop my football. I need that hunger. I still feel I need to do things 10 times better than other players. Just to be accepted and to improve myself.
It is my job to help the players react better.
So I’m going to tell you, it’s going to be a good year. There are good players all over this country, and it is our job as a scouting department to find them, draft them, sign them, develop them, and help us to continue to win championships. So it’s going to be a good year.
The movements which I make I cannot possibly repress because, at the time, I am actually the idea I am interpreting, and naturally I picture my players and auditors as in accord with me. I know, of course, that my mannerisms have been widely discussed.
The magic of playing has to do with how much everyone wants it to succeed. If you have five players in a situation where the music is being improvised and one is determined it is not going to succeed, it won’t succeed even if one of the musicians takes control.
I’ve come to the conclusion that players want to be treated alike.
The great leaders are like the best conductors – they reach beyond the notes to reach the magic in the players.
I was thrown into a position where I had to learn a new language, become professional and not be just that child anymore coming into a team. I was able to learn from players that were so experienced at such a high level. You can’t get that anywhere else. Nothing against college, but you can’t get that in college.
And then came the nineties, when management, suddenly frightened that they had ceded control to the players, sought to restore baseball’s profitability by ‘running the game like a business.’
I do still have some of the experience from playing, but it’s been so long since I’ve been out in those quarters, semis, finals, the important final matches, just against the top players.
I think all great players set a target for themselves in their careers. Mine was to win a world title with Brazil, which I did twice.
It is time for everyone to sit down – the NCAA, the NBA, the players union and the coaching fraternity – and come up with suitable solutions to these problems.
I think one of the most difficult things for anyone who’s played baseball is to accept the fact that maybe the players today are playing just as well as ever.
It’s always great playing with other musicians. It’s also a great situation where I’m the older guy, I’ve influenced generations of guitar players.
A winning model would mean trying to get the best possible players that you can, at whatever age they are; it doesn’t matter.
You know what I really love? The CD players in a car. How when you put the CD right up by the slot, it actually takes it out of your hand, like it’s hungry. It pulls it in, and you feel like it wants more silver discs.
I think the players, I put in the book for example that we should go back to wood rackets, probably they laughed at me, I’m a dinosaur, but I think that you see these great players, have even more variety and you see more strategy, there’d be more subtlety.
No coach has ever won a game by what he knows; it’s what his players know that counts.

The national championship for Syracuse in 2003 will always be the high-water mark for me. That was my alma mater, my team, my players, our fans. That remains the top experience of my basketball life.
Putting me into training sessions playing against players that were 10 years older, that were way more experienced and, honestly, way better, it was a big shock for me.
There’s a line, players usually don’t cross it and coaches usually don’t cross it. Every once in a while you get a little temper tantrum on both sides, I certainly have had ’em. I’m not proud of those.
Tennis Australia really led the charge as far as upping the prize money and trying to do the right thing by the players. They also led the way so women have equal prize money in all the grand slams too.
As a manager, everyone is clambering for you to do something. It comes from the media, the fans, the board and even your own staff sometimes. The strongest thing can be to do nothing and remind the players of the simplicity of the format. The players have taken ownership of that.
I do not abuse players. I talk to myself; I abuse myself. It’s my way of letting off steam. I do it after every century; I do not do it always. I keep telling myself: ‘Improve, improve from the previous match, the previous shot. You can do it.’
It’s football, you work with humans and humans make mistakes. We will do everything in our power to prepare the players so they know to make the right decision at the right times.
I think chess players are not always what you think them to be. Or maybe it’s our job to appear serious.
Who says a center can’t make the pass into the post? Michael Jordan, effectively, was a post player and you saw with the championship teams players able to do multiple things.
A lot of them have families to feed, and I think it’s a tragic situation where players aren’t comfortable speaking what’s on their mind or what’s right because they’re afraid of consequences that come along with it. That’s not an ideal environment for anybody.
I always say to the players, ‘You can either create or wait.’ If you’re waiting, you’re relying on someone else, as simple as that. But if you create it, you’ve got to do it.
True success for me is allowing players to be better than I was. That is what I went into coaching for and I’ve not lost sight of that.

Players who create advantages for their team at one end or the other are rare.
But the citizens of Cincinnati loved their Reds because they won, no matter what their addresses had been the year before. They rooted for the Old-English ‘C’ on the players’ shirts.

I think we’ve got a lot players in the squad who are more suited to European football at the moment.
I would be a very demanding coach. I wouldn’t yell and scream, but I want players that want what I want. And that’s why I couldn’t coach, ’cause I know how hard it is and I know how hard I want you to play. But everyone’s not going to do what I want.
The chemistry at a table is so important. You must start with a carefully balanced mix of personalities. If the balance is off, and the stakes are too big for some of the players, it kills the game. Too small, and everybody gets bored.
During the final two weeks of training, our students work simulated game situations in which our staff members role-play as players, managers, and coaches. They are given immediate feedback following each camp game.

I believe every era has its significance and the same holds true for players and coaches.

Before Wenger came, Arsenal celebrated 1-0 and were based on defensive solidity. With Arsene, joy came from attacking, with players of good standing. And the perfect combination was the Invincibles. But over time, only technical quality and offensive freedom were taken care of, losing the defensive structure.
Unless there is branding, players will not get adequate payment. Why do we want matches to be televised? Why do we want people to turn up for our matches? That’s how you will generate revenue.
I was lucky to start playing guitar in the Eighties when so many great players were around to inspire me, like Yngwie Malmsteen, Van Halen and especially Dave Murray and Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden.
For the Raiders, I’m always going to be ready and willing to go there and talk to those players about whatever.
For a kid that just played for Oviedo, to then going to play for a team like Real Madrid, it felt fantastic. But being taken out of my family home and moving away alone, into the residence Madrid have for young players, it was a bit difficult. But as time passed, I got used to it.
I’d first come to Chelsea from Kosice and, for me, that was a dream. It’s not easy making that move. I was maybe the first player to come from Slovakia to a club like Chelsea, who normally buy players from Holland, Spain, Italy, Portugal.
Leading a group of players who want to win is much easier than leading a group that doubt themselves, aren’t committed or are divided.
The fact that we write about it doesn’t mean we play better than ordinary players at all.
I think Liverpool have a long history with many great players. I hope one day to be up there with those great players. I’ll try my best to write some history here.

I believe in our players, our coaching staff, and our entire franchise.

You want all players to be free of overthinking. That’s when they’re in a good place and a good flow.
My life has changed in many ways, both on an economic and personal level. All major league players are accorded the respect they deserve. In Cuba, it was not that way. National team players were not respected. The treatment was not adequate.
It’s every manager’s dream, I suppose, to build a team by coaching young players of 15 to 17. That’s why I started a youth scheme.
But to be fair, if you take players from my era to now, the game has changed and the players have many more shots. They use them differently than we did. The speed of the game has changed.
I always tell people, good coaches are a dime a dozen. Good coaches that are good people, good husbands, good fathers, that love their players and are passionate about doing things in a way that I believe is important, that pool gets real small.
I believe in work, in connections between the players, I think what makes football great is that it is a team sport. You can win in different ways, by being more of a team, or by having better individual players. It is the team ethic that interests me, always.
I don’t think that players learn how to play any other aspect of the game in high school or college.
You look at all the elite players around the League, the guys that are responsible defensively, the guys that can score at will, they kind of do it all.
I talked to the players and tried to make them aware of what was good and bad, but I didn’t try to run their lives.
Most announcers play pattycake, pattycake with the players they’re covering.
I think each player has an individual style. Each is concerned with giving the best to his team, and I think my best talent is dribbling and setting up goal situations, giving an assist or deceiving one of the other team’s players.
As players we’re held accountable for poor performance, I think the same should be said for journalists.
My goal is to outwork everybody in recruiting, sign the best players in the state, and turn these guys into the best team we can.
I wanted the players to feel like they were part of a family, to be conscious of that controlled togetherness as they made that slow entrance onto the field. It had a great psychological effect on the opposing team, too. They’d never seen anything like it.
That’s the great thing with Lyon: we are such a competitive group of players, but we know each other so well, so what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch.
Italy have plenty of high-quality players. Newcomers need time to get adjusted to the set-up and the system of play. I’m very young, and although I think I have shown good quality in my international games, I realise that there are plenty of others competing for places.

Chess is a great training ground for poker players because it’s a math-based game, much like backgammon is.
I think what coaching is all about, is taking players and analyzing there ability, put them in a position where they can excel within the framework of the team winning. And I hope that I’ve done that in my 33 years as a head coach.
My childhood closet was ornamented with U.S. jerseys of World Cups spanning the nineties and two-thousands – some of my favorite memories are from summers when, with a ball under my foot and a jersey on my back, I watched the U.S. team go up against the world’s best players in the largest sporting event on Earth.
The more mental strength you have, the better. If you look at some of the best players that we have seen over the years and that I have been playing with, mentally they are the best competitors as well, something I have worked hard on.
I feel like football players are overworked and underpaid compared to any other sports.
Ask me about my football, and not too much else. I just want to be a player among the players.

The mental focus it takes to compete against the best players in the world is not easy to maintain. Developing mental toughness is a learned trait, and if you can’t develop it in your pursuit of success, you likely won’t last in any competitive line of work for more than a cup of coffee.
I learned a lot in the Minor Leagues, spending six years there. I honed my skills, as far as coaching goes. I was able to work with the players in a lot of facets of the game.
All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.
You’re convincing these big, tough football players to wear what was essentially women’s lingerie. There was a little bit of a Jedi mind trick that needed to take place. The product really spoke for itself once guys felt it and touched it.
Liverpool had African players from the ’50s and ’60s. There were goalkeepers in the early days from South Africa. Then in 1981 there was a guy who came to Anfield. They say ‘who is this guy’ and it is me; I am African.

There are so many really good players in the men’s game that no one person can dominate year after year.

There was a rule at Rangers, going back to the 1950s, that players needed to turn up for every training session dressed in a suit and tie. I was a teenager. You’d have been lucky to see me in a jacket even on a Sunday – it just wasn’t my style.
Cricket needs brightening up a bit. My solution is to let the players drink at the beginning of the game, not after. It always works in our picnic matches.

The biggest problem for badminton is wind direction and lighting. If those problems are not solved, it seriously impacts players’ performances on the court. If a high-level player’s performance is affected by these factors, they suffer setbacks and cannot be fully satisfied on the court.
Football players have always got a problem, some pain, and in some games, I have had small problems with my knee or some pain, and I played anyway, but people don’t know if I have a problem or not. I know it’s more five-star now than it was then, but it’s still a difficult tour. In the same way as India and Pakistan players find it difficult coming to Australia. People sometimes have difficulty believing that.
Of course you think about the goalkeeper you are facing before a game. You have to prepare yourself for the game and think about the weakness of the players you are up against.
We talked with PSG, but quickly, I knew that it wasn’t where I wanted to go. In France, for me, it was only Lyon. PSG could have enabled me to make progress because they have great players, but I wanted to experience another league.
A professional player is smarter than a college man. He uses his noodle. He knows what to do and when to do it. He rarely goes up in the air as is the case with most of our college players when they get in a tight place.
What I always do is just look at the players, look at the best 11 they can put on the pitch.

I like teams to control and dominate the ball so the players are hungry for the ball.
I talk a lot about Jackie MacMullan. Think about the trust and the equity Jackie has built with people in this game. When you watch her work, there is such a high level of respect given. It’s hard to describe it, but you can see it when players engage with her.
Although I am not in the thick of things when it comes to T20 cricket, but as an ODI captain, I’d like to give more stability to the players.

The best football players in the world still earn very little money compared to people who really earn money.
There is a risk women’s football becomes the most popular spectator sport that fans tune into every four years but are not interested in parting with their money to watch the same players on their doorstep.

While we glorify football players for their accomplishments on the field, they are not heroes.
It’s getting better and better. You know, guys are feeling more comfortable and they are not afraid to speak up and be a leader. I mean, our team, we have 25 players, we have about 25 leaders, too. So whatever someone says, people listen.
If your best players are taking a shortcut, they’re going to have problems holding everyone else accountable and responsible.
A coach once told me there are four factors that determine a players’ performance: his tactical awareness, his physical condition, his technical ability and his mental strength.
Michu and Van Persie are similar. They look alike. They are both tall, left-footed players. They are not fast, but they know when to make the runs.

Some players get over-dependable on their coaches.
Major league baseball has asked its players to stop tossing baseballs into the stands during games, because they say fans fight over them and they get hurt. In fact, the Florida Marlins said that’s why they never hit any home runs. It’s a safety issue.
I always like the players to be within 10 to 15 metres of each other. When the attacking players try what I am asking them to do, and it breaks down, there are players close enough to then go and win the ball back and counter press the game.
I do believe Allen Iverson knew this, and I believe all the players know this: that certain referees treat them much better than others.
The American professional schedule gives players a six-month off-season, so many of us have become pickup regulars while training without an organized team.
It’s hard for young players to see the big picture. They just see three or four years down the road.
Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time spots. That’s who I want to be.
Japanese players do not like being thrown into an arena in which they are given very little instruction. You can head in any direction, 360 degrees. They say, ‘What am I supposed to do? Give me hints. Provide me service instead of just throwing me into this arena.’
Look, coaching is about human interaction and trying to know your players. Any coach would tell you that. I’m no different.
Yes, we’ve seen it all before. And yes, those who do not study history are condemned to repeat it. But no, the sky is not falling – baseball is such a great game that neither the owners nor the players can kill it. After some necessary carnage, market forces will prevail.
I don’t go out at all. I have my three restaurants that I go to, and that’s it. I spend the least possibly time here on-site because that takes energy away as well. There is a lot of people, you know. It’s massive kind of stadium, a lot of players.
As a coach you can influence the diet of your players. You can point out what is wrong.
First of all, it was such an honor to be chosen. You had to be voted in by players and coaches that time. But having it in Hawai’i was a brilliant idea.
I had no idea until I joined the games industry and met some of the power players, particularly those running large public companies, that much of this world is run by complete clowns.
When I signed my first contract with Sao Paulo I still wasn’t sure that I was going to have a successful career. Even after you turn professional the competition is so intense, and as I was a bit older than some of the other players, I thought that it would be harder for me.
We try to recruit good players and good people.
I think I earned the players’ respect, and that’s the ultimate in life, isn’t it? I didn’t care if they liked me or disliked me, as long as I had their respect.
You should never be defined by what you do, by the things you have; you’ve got to define yourself by who you are and who you impact and how you impact people. And that’s the thing I try to get across to my players.
You try on purpose to get players with different qualities which will rub off on one another.
At Real, psychological pressure on the players is much more serious than at United. This is good. At many clubs, you don’t know the consequence of playing badly.
One is my club, I want to develop those players, and I want to be in the beginning at least, until I have everything ready, I want to spend as much time to develop those kids as possible.
One person’s going to win, and everybody else is going to not win. So let’s not feel like we’re losers. Let’s utilize the cultural opportunities, get to know the other players on the other team, look around you, enjoy your world series.
I criticize a lot of players and coaches. But I back it up with facts. A lot of times guys get mad at me because someone told them what I said. I say, ‘You’re wrong: Go check the tape.’
Young players need freedom of expression to develop as creative players… they should be encouraged to try skills without fear of failure.
They thought we were going to hurt the game, but we just wanted to help ourselves, because the players needed to get together to protect their interests.
Maybe Klopp is the best manager in the world at creating teams who attack the back four with so many players, from almost anywhere on the pitch. They have an intensity with the ball and without the ball, and it is not easy to do that.
Young boys must be taught to play football without leading with or lowering their heads. Young players must be drilled over and over and over with Heads Up Football skills until that skill set becomes muscle memory and second nature.
Getting the best out of your best players gets the best out of the team.
My heroes were always soccer players.
I’ll miss the competitive side and the camaraderie of being around the players and competing each and every day.
Shinji Kagawa is one of the best players in the world, and he now plays 20 minutes at Manchester United – on the left wing! My heart breaks. Really, I have tears in my eyes. Central midfield is Shinji’s best role.
Johnny Winter is one of the best blues players in the world. He’s very underrated.
‘Doom’ aficionados expand their adventures as far as their imaginations and artistic abilities allow. Once players have exhausted the ‘authorized’ levels of ‘Doom,’ they can go on to explore thousands of additional unauthorized levels available in kits and on the Internet.
I watch a lot of hockey. There are some good hockey players and there are some awfully stupid hockey players.
At Atletico, I always played with older players, sometimes out of position. I’d keep going back until I beat them.
My job, when it comes to free agency, trades, is not to pick players, but support the personnel department and the coaching staff. We have to have the financial resources to make things happen and that’s my job.
The trouble is not that players have sex the night before a game. It’s that they stay out all night looking for it.
As you can probably tell, the push to develop talent in Africa is personal. I grew up there. I played there. I know how much talent there is. We have to concentrate on building facilities, establishing successful leagues and finding investors to help young players.
A different type of human has to play that sport. Hockey players keep fighting – nobody cares what’s wrong with you, as long as you have one foot to skate on, you keep playing.
I like to watch soccer, no matter what teams or players are in the field.
All the NFL players I have examined pathologically, I have not seen one that did not have changes in their brain system with brain damage.
Players have two things to do. Play and keep their mouths shut.
My philosophy is that you don’t motivate players with speeches; you have motivated players that you draft. That’s where they come in, and those are the guys that are competitive. You can not teach competitiveness.
I think there are much bigger differences between players in this league than between coaches. There is a big gap between LeBron James and the small forward for whoever. Far bigger than between two coaches.
In the Under-21s, I played good football for several years, trying to play the same game as the best and with some very good players.
It’s not easy for the players change the racquet.
I hustle, I run down the line, I do whatever I can to win ball games. Those are the only things we can control as baseball players.
There’s nobody you can point to in the world that doesn’t make a mistake. The best players, the best business people, the best coaches. So one thing is not going to make or break a person.
If I look at my era, you looked at the black players who were playing then and there weren’t many – Clyde Best… Certainly as each generation has gone, there have been role models for young black players to aspire to.
It’s more difficult to achieve something with the national team because players from several clubs get together and less frequently.
My dad taught me, like, no matter what, when I go out and play against these bigger players, just to be myself. I knew that I was good enough and that I had the ability to. I never shy away from anyone, and I don’t think anyone should.
It was a wonderful experience to play in the NFL, and I have no regrets. I truly will miss playing for the Lions. I consider the Lions’ players, coaches, staff, management and fans my family. I leave on good terms with everyone in the organization.
Society is indeed better off when we share knowledge with one another and have open debates about the issues in the public arena, with the hands and motives of the players identified.
Ashley Cole is a fantastic defender. I have seen him keep the best players in the world quiet.
I personally believe that more and more players think that 10 hours is the right kind of play time for a game.
Free speech is against governments, not against the NBA. So the players and coaches and indeed owners have been fined for their speech, which is costly rather than free. I sort of acknowledge that there is not free speech when you agree to work in the NBA.
I think average players are able to play well now and again, or they’ll play very, very well. Good players or great players, nine times out of ten, they have good games.
Time and time again, the players constantly surprise you and often not do at all what you expect and completely muck up your preparation, and that’s kind of the beauty of the game. It wouldn’t be as fun to the DM if everything worked out exactly how you thought it would.
I’m trying to be the coach. My actors are my players. They’re doing things that I’m too cowardly to do myself.
Sometimes I say in France: Europe is no more the center of the world – and the United States, neither. We have other key players on the international stage: China, of course; but also Brazil, India and South Africa. And their influence is very, very strong.
I think, actually, any morality system that rewards only the extremes is a flawed system. Players don’t approach life that way, they don’t approach games that way, and they shouldn’t be trained to approach games that way. They shouldn’t be in the ‘Star Wars’ mode where, ‘I’ve got to choose every good option.’
Dark Souls is in some ways an incomplete game, and I like to think that it has been completed by players, by their discoveries, as they moved along. I’d love to say that the nature of this incompleteness was completely deliberate, but it is both deliberate and by accident in different ways.
I truly believe that players who tell you they don’t feel the pressure of international cricket, of being away from home for months at a time, are lying to everyone and themselves.
Often there are players who have only football as a way of expressing themselves and never develop other interests. And when they no longer play football, they no longer do anything; they no longer exist, or rather they have the sensation of no longer existing.
People say you can’t go out and eat with your players. I say why not.
Man, coaching is a hard job, and it requires a lot of time… I hear stories from coaches who tell me that players call them in the middle of the night not knowing where they parked their car. You are baby-sitting rich, spoiled kids… I don’t know where you parked your car!
Superstar NBA players don’t just change positions in their prime. Not eight years into their careers… not when they’ve been consistently at the top of the league in scoring… and especially not when their team lacks another dominant scorer.
We want to be strong and we want to be in a position to maximise the potential of the players in every game because it’s a long season with 46 league games.
I’m on the board of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which is run by Dr. Stacy Smith – she conceived of the inclusion rider. What I love about the inclusion rider is it uses the fact that Hollywood is based on hierarchies, and it knows that these key players have persuasive power.
My parents have been volleyball players, and my dad is an Arjuna awardee in volleyball.
There’s those young girls that I once was, looking up to Mia Hamm, Christine Lilly, all those players, and I know how much of an effect they had on me. Knowing that, I feel like I’m in a position where I can really help be a positive influence in girls’ lives.
The life was good in Qatar but I did not enjoy the football. For me, 12 months was enough. The standard was low, but not that low. It was OK but the ambition was not there from the players. It was like playing for nothing. I didn’t like that feeling.
The great secret is that an orchestra can actually play without a conductor at all. Of course, a great conductor will have a concept and will help them play together and unify them. But there are conductors that actually inhibit the players from playing with each other properly.
When I look back over my career, having an opportunity to compete against really good players like Lester Hayes are some of the highlights.
There is a mutual respect that exists between coaches and players, and ultimately, it’s about us trying to help them reach their highest potential.
Even if I’m the worst player in the NBA, I’m one of the best players in the world.
When I look back at what I had to go through in black baseball, I can only marvel at the many black players who stuck it out for years in the Jim Crow leagues because they had nowhere else to go.
The biggest memory I have is the 1984 European Cup final against Roma and my ‘spaghetti legs’ routine during the penalty shoot-out that won us the trophy. People said I was being disrespectful to their players, but I was just testing their concentration under pressure. I guess they failed that test.
There are already gay players in the NFL and have been for a while.
When I was a young player, I would look at players and think, he does this well, and try and pick up good points from them, or he conducts himself well, I’ll pick up on that.

I think the blues is fine for blues players, but free blues has never made much sense to me.
We have to talk about the players we have.
There are lots of mentally very tough players that I have played against and with.
I like to study everything: the way to be dangerous when you are attacking; what the players should do when you don’t have the ball; where they should be. The tactics you tell the players to follow come from all this study.
Umpires, like players, are expected to show constant improvement each season and at each level. Inconsistent plate work and the inability to handle situations are probably the two biggest problems that minor league umpires face.
Barcelona has always had issues with Brazilian players: Neymar, Romario, Ronaldinho, and me. We were all treated badly by the club in the end, despite all our contributions and dedication.
I just think overall a lot of it has to do with conditioning and players putting in the time and the effort in the off-season to keep themselves in condition for 12 months a year.
The new Pirates! builds on that legacy delivering an even more powerful and fun experience to players… and is still unmatched in offering a blend of genres in one great game.
Sports build good habits, confidence, and discipline. They make players into community leaders and teach them how to strive for a goal, handle mistakes, and cherish growth opportunities.
At every club I have been at I have had a test in the first few weeks from the big players at the club. At that moment you define your success at that club, you either win the group or you lose the group.
Two years ago, of course, I was just a rookie and listened to everybody. In a way I am still a rookie. I’m only 23 and I’ll be surrounded by great players who have played in a lot more Ryder Cups than myself. But the rankings say I am the best player at the moment and so that brings a responsibility.
In the modern game, players need to train harder than they did in my day.
Consistency in selection is great but it’s a whole lot easier if you’ve got players who warrant that consistency through their performances.
I played the mini-tours for a lot of years, and man, you see some weird things out there. There are a lot of desperate people, strange personalities and marginal players, and with that you’re going to see some cheating.
I’m not pro-owner or pro-player. I am pro-football. I want the game to go on. I want the game to be tough. I don’t want the game to be a killer of our players.
The NBA is getting bigger. Basketball is getting better around the world. There are more players. There are better coaches around it, so that’s why there are more international players, not only Hispanic players, but from everywhere.
All hockey players are bilingual. They know English and profanity.
All of a sudden I’m in the major leagues and we’re traveling from town to town. I see the other players dressing different every day. I’ve got only one suit and I keep wearing it over and over. I’m really embarrassed.
My mother was a champion high-jumper. My three brothers are basketball players. We’ve all been very athletic.
If Roger stopped right now and never won another match, to me he’d already be one of the greatest players to ever play the game. To me, he’s the greatest all around talent that I’ve ever seen.
I don’t really find it to be a man-dominated industry. I mean, I guess when you look at it, it is, but I don’t really look at it as a female or male thing, or female or male guitar players or whatever.
Bryan Gray at Preston gave me a chance, even though Joe Royle and Ian Rush were being linked with the job. He taught me an awful lot about structuring the job and encouraged me to invest in young players.
I’m going to try to enjoy the All-Star break, hope my players reflect on what happened the first half of the season, come back with a different attitude, try to find our solution on how to win it.
Ajax was spending too much money; they were buying players that were too expensive. If you get 100 per cent, you can’t spend 120 per cent. It’s quite easy.
Sports in Indonesia aren’t being supported by the government. The rewards you get as a young player don’t match the effort you put in. I want to be different from other athletes, if not better, and I want to make something good out of my profile and help the younger players have opportunities.
Baseball is a public trust. Players turn over, owners turn over and certain commissioners turn over. But baseball goes on.
I am inspired by all kinds of players and singers.
From the time when I started out, the best players around then were Roberto Baggio and Ryan Giggs.
It’s all right buying all these good players but they’ve got to gel, and that takes time.
For several years, I have had my eye on second baseman Del Pratt of St. Louis. I cannot say that he is a better player than our own Joe Gedeon, but he has played better ball, and we wanted him. Well, how did I get him? I paid $15,000 in cash and gave away a number of good players for him. But what can you do?
I played with a lot of great players before. They’re all the same. They take a lot of responsibility for their own play, put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform and to play well.
I get excited after I dunk. I yell and scream, but it’s not yelling and screaming at other players to show them up. It’s the way I play. What I do is have fun on the court.
I have found that the players who have played in that game really do have respect for their adversaries.
I long for the days when athletes were revered. I want to see the romance return to sports, to see people enjoy the game purely for the game and the players.
The math works. Over the course of a season, there’s some predictability to baseball. When you play 162 games, you eliminate a lot of random outcomes. There’s so much data that you can predict: individual players’ performances and also the odds that certain strategies will pay off.
Ultimately, rugby players are like surfers. You look for the perfect wave, but you don’t always find it. And if you did, you’d probably pack up and try something else.
Look at the better players of my era – Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd. They had pros they worked with from time to time, but out on Tour, thousands of miles from home, each of them learned to be his own best coach. I think Tiger can do the same.
From the time I was 3, I wanted to be a major-league player. To accomplish that at 35, get my name on my jersey, be in the clubhouse with major-league players, see my family for the first time in three months, be in my home state and pitch the day I got called up, was incredible.
As far as other instrumentalists, I used to love mellow sax players like Paul Desmond. I love piano.
I am not saying that I am at the same level as Messi or Ronaldo. They are the best two players in the world, but I am very proud that I managed to finish above them in the goalscoring charts, especially as I was playing for Atletico Madrid, not Barcelona or Real Madrid.
I have no distributor… it is indicative to me that there are these pockets of players and collectors all over. You should see the correspondence I get from over the world letting me know how significant they think I am. I know that wherever I go, I am well received.
Where Joe was more vocal and emotional whereas Chuck was very reserved. But, both of them executed great strategy and both of them demanded a lot of their players.
Football is definitely present in the tennis world. Given the mix of nationalities that exists in the changing rooms, there’s inevitably a bit of a rivalry between the players, especially in terms of the UEFA Champions League or competitions in which national teams compete.
The 24-hour news cycle is kind of insatiable. Players in the ’80s and ’90s didn’t have to deal with that scrutiny.
If every player is on the left, and I am on the right, you need to trust me that I have seen something the other players have not seen.
For me, the training has to be a mixture of hard work – it has to have a good structure, a good base – but also, I don’t want all my players to be like machines.
Really, coaching is simplicity. It’s getting players to play better than they think that they can.
The unwritten rule in college basketball is the black assistant goes and gets the black players. Don’t worry about the X’s and O’s. Just recruit.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with lots of really good players, so it would be disrespectful to single out the best.
When you come to a game, it’s supposed to be fun for the players and the fans.
Some players have 18 years in football. But some players are injured before they start. When I thought like that I said: ‘If I compare with that I have been very lucky. At least I had 10 years of a beautiful experience that changed my life for ever.’
That’s the great thing about golf is you never know who is going to win. On good, tough golf courses, it brings it back to the best players. But it’s always the best player that week is going to win. I mean, so it could be anybody.
I had given up the guitar between ’75 and ’78. I completely lost interest. I was sick of hearing other guitar players and I was tired of my tunes.

I got players with bad watches – they can’t tell midnight from noon.
Don’t try to kid yourself that your game is about pace if it isn’t. If you’re a big guy like me you need to look at how similarly built players use that physical presence to influence a game. Accept that your build may have some limitations – but plenty of plus points too.
It’s not only what happens on the court that makes us the players we are; it’s also everything that happens outside the court.
I never really listened to any particular trombone players.
I think tennis is going towards the direction of powerful, hard hitters, and that’s what us tall people are. We are trying to play very aggressive; we’re trying to make a lot of winners, and, I mean, I don’t know. That’s what tall players kind of do.
I knew I wasn’t a baseball writer. I was scared to death. I really was afraid to talk to players, and I didn’t want to go into the press box because I thought I was faking it.
Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child. Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count past five.
The Porto players were with me for two and a half years, they believed in me, in my methods, in the way we do it. The next day I go and a manager arrives who works completely differently.
Eliminating the piano means that I’ve always worked closer with the bass than most players.
Some of the money from the senior players goes to helping out the younger kids. It is from the players’ pool, the fines for being late and so on. Some will go to something like the tsunami appeal and some to helping out young players.
Obviously you’d always be happy to have another tour on the side, earning extra money, but for most of the players I think we’re all pretty happy.
I like my players to be married and in debt. That’s the way you motivate them.
I was so focused on winning and coaching; there were times players felt like I was really tough on them and hard on them. Now, I try to be more considerate with how I get my message across.
River is a fantastic club that goes beyond just football. They offer so many sports and activities within the club. There are schools for young players, and its DNA can be identified by every other club in Argentina.

When a point guard is unselfish and thinking about the team, about winning first, it relates to the other players. So, I think that is my style of play.
I think it’s a very important collaboration between the conductor and the orchestra – especially when the conductor is one more member of the orchestra in the way that you are leading, but also respecting, feeling and building the same way for all the players to understand the music.
Among players, coaches, people who know football, yes I feel I get recognition.
Conspiracy theorists of the world, believers in the hidden hands of the Rothschilds and the Masons and the Illuminati, we skeptics owe you an apology. You were right. The players may be a little different, but your basic premise is correct: The world is a rigged game.
Great players must always produce and at any time or in any game. Give them a ball and a pitch, and they will show what they’ve got. That relaxed, calm spirit you don’t really have when you are young.
You can have a bunch of individually good players, but it doesn’t matter. You gotta learn to play like a team.
You want the players in the locker room to know you as that kid that fights ’til the end, has that never-say-die attitude.
I have a lot of power. Here, I can decide: training at six in the morning! Training 11 in the night! But my style is not to impose. I would like to convince the players of what they are doing. This takes more time.
You have to help your players understand that when they speak to the media, or when they tweet or text or e-mail, a lot of times, they become public knowledge.

Black and white players hadn’t appeared together in public before Teddy Wilson and I began working with B.G.
When I first joined the team, I was playing with the likes of Mia Hamm, Shannon MacMillan, Tiffeny Milbrett – all those big-time players. It was very intimidating. I had some of these players’ posters on my wall growing up, and now I was able to play with them.
I like to be funny. I can’t stay all the time focused, disciplined, controlled. Behaviour like that is impossible. If the players are too nervous before a game, I have to relax them, calm them.
For me, and I’ve been on record saying it, let’s create two leagues: one for players who want the college football experience, and another for those that want to get paid, have the NFL help fund it, whatever. Guys who don’t want to go to school to get an education, let them go to work.

English banjo players really were a law unto themselves – you don’t find that kind of brisk banjo playing on the original Louis Armstrong or Bix Beiderbecke records.
I don’t like it when a player says, ‘I like freedom; I want to play for myself.’ Because the player has to understand he is part of a team with 10 other players. If everyone wants to be a jazz musician, it will be chaos. They will not be a team, and nothing will be possible.
Players shy away from talking to announcers today.
After the ’96 Olympics, we all started believing that this is bigger than we thought, and we were willing to do the work. We knew that it was up to us, the players, to make soccer successful.

A manager should stay as far away as possible from his players. I don’t know if I said ten words to Frank Robinson while he played for me.
During my years of professional cricket in England, I realised that although the Australians were talented players, tactically they were a bit naive when compared to those who played full-time on the English circuit. You might find this arrogant, but that was the reality then.
