When you do television, you’re filming out of sequence sometimes. You have to ground yourself very quickly in the character and in the work and in the words. I think theater allowed me that sort of sharp, quick focus to do that.
Adrienne C. Moore
I love directing more than anything in the world, and I love being in the editing room. I love cutting. When I’m shooting, I cut it in my head anyway. That’s not to say that it always turns out that way, but you have a sense when you’re composing a sequence or a scene how you want it to look anyway.
Hart Bochner
For myself, the only way I know how to make a book is to construct it like a collage: a bit of dialogue here, a scrap of narrative, an isolated description of a common object, an elaborate running metaphor which threads between the sequences and holds different narrative lines together.

Roger Deakins
People think, ‘Oh, well how can ‘The Hobbit,’ which is one book, become three films?’ But you can take one line from an appendice and it turns into a whole sequence.

Kevin Costner
I have to write in sequence and only in sequence.
Andrew Scott
In a script, you have to link various episodes together, you have to generate suspense and you have to assemble things – through editing, for example. It’s exactly the same in architecture. Architects also put together spatial episodes to make sequences.

I’m involved with every single thing that they do as far as just being aware, and then they ask my opinion. I’m involved in the sequence reviews and some of the animation reviews and character designs and things like that. I give my input on that movie as well.
Klay Hall
I loved Road Warrior the first time. I saw The Road Warrior before I saw Mad Max, you know, I saw it in reverse order. And so I was, I’ve always been a fan of George Miller. This sequence I think got storyboarded after Fury Road came out I think as I recall. So I think, you know, we were inspired [making Maora].
John Musker
Leonardo Fibonacci, the great 13th century Italian mathematician (1175-1250) created the ‘Fibonacci sequence’ to explain behavior in nature mathematically. History has it that the first question he posed was how many rabbits would be created in one year starting with one pair.

I don’t really think in terms of making something that is going to be bought everywhere, because I don’t read those things. My writing is a process in which I try my best to make good sentences and a sequence of events that is compelling and believable.

What I like to do is treat words as a craftsman does his wood or stone or what-have-you, to hew, carve, mold, coil, polish, and plane them into patterns, sequences, sculptures, fugues of sound expressing some lyrical impulse, some spiritual doubt or conviction, some dimly realized truth I must try to reach and realize.
Dylan Thomas
Usually with this genre the first thing that happens is a good fight sequence to show that you’re in good hands. So we broke that rule. I think a lot of that comes from the western audience.
Ang Lee
I sequence during the entire recording process. The sequencing changes as I’m recording and as I’m listening. From when I’m, like, four songs in, I start trying to figure out which song should come after which. Which is important, and it changes as the album goes.
Dr. Dre
It’s rare in a documentary film that you have a repetitive act. So when you do, you can shoot it in different ways so that you have more choices when you’re sitting down to edit that sequence six months later.

‘The Big Lebowski”s soundtrack has had as much of an influence on me as the film itself. My favorite Bob Dylan song is ‘The Man in Me,’ which plays over the movie’s opening credits as well as during the first dream sequence.
Josh Gondelman
I have a hunch that the unknown sequences of DNA will decode into copyright notices and patent protections.
Donald Knuth
Mostly what you lose with time, in memory, is the specificity of things, their exact sequence. It all runs together, becomes a watery soup. Portmanteau days, imploded years. Like a bad actor, memory always goes for effect, abjuring motivation, consistency, good sense.
James Sallis
A form of government that is not the result of a long sequence of shared experiences, efforts, and endeavors can never take root.

For anyone who’s a fan of the X-files show – I mean, I have the ultimate role. I got to deal with Mulder, I got to talk to him, I had a fight sequence with him. Really for anyone who is a fan of the show, I think I fulfilled a lot of young boys’ dreams.
Rhys Darby
[Decoding the human genome sequence] is the most significant undertaking that we have mounted so far in an organized way in all of science. I believe that reading our blueprints, cataloguing our own instruction book, will be judged by history as more significant than even splitting the atom or going to the moon.
Francis Collins
There was a whole sequence of concept art about a ‘Fable’ set in a kind of steampunk Victoriana age.
Peter Molyneux
No poet is required to write in stanzas, or indeed in regular forms at all. Coleridge’s ‘Dejection: An Ode’ has a rhyme scheme and sequence of long and short lines that goes without regular pattern, following the mood and whim of the poet. Such a form is known as an irregular ode.
James Fenton
Individual societies begin in harmonious adaptation to the environment and, like individuals, quickly get trapped into nonadaptive, artificial, repetitive sequences.

Simon Conway Morris
Before he has seen the whole, how unusually perceptive and imaginative the person must be to evolve the entire sequence by meditating on its single, pair or triplet of essential images.
Minor White
I never plan ahead, with the exception of the Amber books which had to proceed in sequence. But I don’t really like to know what I’m going to be working on a year in advance. So I just sign blank contracts for books and whatever strikes me as a good idea is what I write about.
Roger Zelazny
The more we study mind and matter scientifically the more we see that all things follow a natural sequence, a sequence as liable to work for our disadvantage as for our advantage. It flows like the water of a river, it falls like rain, it is as impartial as the sea. It is as innocent of malice as it is of compassion.
Llewelyn Powys

David R. Ellis
How is the base sequence, divided into codons? There is nothing in the backbone of the nucleic acid, which is perfectly regular, to show us how to group the bases into codons.
Francis Crick
Everything’s always got to be character-based. We know we can’t, if we’re sitting in the editing room, watch the sequence for more than 20 seconds without a character having a point of view or moving the action forward; my brain just shuts down, or I start thinking about my laundry.
Anthony Russo
A lot of the issues of rhythm in film are found in the editing because it’s very rare that any sequence is the sequence that is shot.
Frederick Wiseman
I actually think storyboards are great. I don’t draw well enough to do them myself. I’ve only used storyboards a couple of times. We used two storyboards in ‘Margaret’: one for the bus accident and for the opera sequence at the end.

All great inventions emerge from a long sequence of small sparks; the first idea often isn’t all that good, but thanks to collaboration it later sparks another idea, or it’s reinterpreted in an unexpected way. Collaboration brings small sparks together to generate breakthrough innovation.
Scott Belsky
As far as action is concerned, our films have been coming up with some great sequences. In fact, I think Hollywood is copying Bollywood by getting their heroes to bash up 15 guys at a time.
Vijender Singh
Shooting in real-life situations helps actors because they’re competing against the noise and the wind. Out of that comes things that shift and change, in terms of tone, but not in terms of re-honing the whole sequence.
Tony Scott
To me the gospel is not a great mass of theological jargon. It is a simple and beautiful and logical thing, with one quiet truth following another in orderly sequence. I do not fret over the mysteries. I do not worry whether the heavenly gates swing or slide. I am only concerned that they open.
Gordon B. Hinckley
I wouldn’t say I see things visually first, but what I do think is important, for a lot of screenwriters, is to not just think about the words on the page, but also the world as a whole and the vibe of the movie, rather than a sequence of scenes written on the page.
Evan Daugherty

John Allen Paulos
When we experience a film, we consciously prime ourselves for illusion. Putting aside will and intellect, we make way for it in our imagination. The sequence of pictures plays directly on our feelings.
Ingmar Bergman
I don’t really know what I want, other than good sequences, whatever that means. What I find is always a matter of chance, judgment, and luck.

Amy Hempel
I draw things on the paper very freely but believing there is meaning to them already. There is already meaning in the colors, I don’t need to be guided by words. I draw them and the meaning comes after. Every time we would start a new sequence we would change everything.
Alex Abreu
You get so caught up in what you’re writing – action sequences tend to do that more than anything else because you’re living it, and feeling for your characters.
Iain Banks

Ralph Bakshi
Look at the opening sequence of ‘The Blues Brothers,’ which starts at the prison. The way it was filmed, it does not look like a comedy. I thought that was great.
Jay Chandrasekhar

By itself, an ordinary snapshot is no less banal than the petite madeleine in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time… but as goad to memory, it is often the first integer in a sequence of recollections that has the power to deny time for the sake of love.
Michael Lesy
I have ballet class every other day for two hours. And for “Six Feet Under”, last week there was a sequence where I had to do a whole choreographed dance number, so I had four hours of dance practice every day.
Michelle Trachtenberg
Video game voicing is absolutely different from cartoon work. In cartoons, you’re almost always there with the entire cast, and the entire script is acted out in sequence. With video games, it’s you by yourself, in a room with a script you just got when you walked in.
Josh Keaton
There’s nothing that compares to watching that final of Charles Mee’s ‘The Glory of the World’ play at BAM17 to 20 minute sequence in one sitting. It fills you with a giddy energy watching that. Then, being gifted with the silence that follows…I’ve never had a theatrical experience like that before, I’m sure.

Northrop Frye
The body of science is not, as it is sometimes thought, a huge coherent mass of facts, neatly arranged in sequence, each one attached to the next by a logical string. In truth, whenever we discover a new fact it involves the elimination of old ones. We are always, as it turns out, fundamentally in error.
Lewis Thomas
Programming language is very specific to instructing a computer to do a particular structure of a sequence. It’s the very way you tell the machine what you want it to do.
Brian Kernighan
Music has to be written while people are still excited about a particular melodic or rhythmic sequence. The idea doesn’t come out the same if we’re not really excited about it.

Ingmar Bergman
Positively, the effect of speeding up temporal sequence is to abolish time, much as the telegraph and cable abolished space. Of course, the photograph does both.
Marshall McLuhan
I’m fascinated by the idea that genetics is digital. A gene is a long sequence of coded letters, like computer information. Modern biology is becoming very much a branch of information technology.
Richard Dawkins
Out in the sun, some painters are lined up. The first is copying nature, the second is copying the first, the third is copying the second… You see the sequence.

The variety within Mann’s fiction is impressive and fascinating. But Joyce is even more various and many-sided. He begins his career with a wonderful sequence of bleak studies about the ways in which human lives can go awry – in my view, Dubliners is underrated.
Philip Kitcher
‘Ice Age’ felt like stage acting. You’d write a sequence, and sometimes you’d submit pages, but other times, I would actually perform it for the directors and producer in my office.
Jason Fuchs
I like my song-sequences in my movies, but one of the things I like about them, is I get in and I get out.
Quentin Tarantino
I have never intended in any of my films to sell violence or to glorify it. Even in the most intense action sequences in my films, there is a message about how evil violence is.
John Woo
Our art culture makes no attempt to search the past for precedents, but transforms the entire past into a sequence of provisional responses to a problem that remains intact.

G. Campbell Morgan
Principles of motion take precedence over sequence of motion.

Praise is nothing that accumulates. Praise is a sequence, especially if you’ve toiled for a long time. Praise does not pile up. So in a way, you can’t get too much. I don’t consider it to be a quantity that you can measure by volume.
Christoph Waltz
I can understand how technologically advanced action has become in our movies, but unless there is emotion or a strong story, it doesn’t work. With every action sequence, there must be an emotion to justify it.
Sajid Khan
Just movies in general. It’s such a wonderful business as much as you feel, you are fine tuning your craft, every movie is a completely different challenge. Every fight sequence is different. Every action set piece. I enjoy that.
Len Wiseman
This landing is gonna get pretty interesting. Define “interesting”. “Oh God, oh God, we’re all going to die”? [on speakerphone]: This is the captain: we have a little problem with our entry sequence so we may experience some slight turbulence, then explode.
Joss Whedon
A city, far from being a cluster of buildings, is actually a sequence of spaces enclosed and defined by buildings.
I. M. Pei
I mean, in terms of comfort, it was horrible, but we knew the sequence was going to be good. That sort of drives you forward when you know what you’re working on is going to be fun. You’ll go through all manner of discomfort to get the shot.
Michael Chiklis
With a hundred and seventy-eight machines to sequence the precise order of the billions of chemicals within a molecule of DNA, B.G.I. produces at least a quarter of the world’s genomic data – more than Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health, or any other scientific institution.
Michael Specter
Would a watermelon in the midst of a chase sequence not be, in its own organic way, emblematic of our entire misunderstood enterprise? At once totally logical and perfectly irrational?

Carroll Quigley
There’s a lot of movies that aren’t all about Christmas, or where Christmas isn’t the focus, but have that spirit of Christmas in them. I love that sequence in ‘Auntie Mame,’ where she’s in the department store, sewing at Macy’s, and she doesn’t know how to do anything but fill out a form as ‘cash on delivery!’
Robert Osborne
The movie, by sheer speeding up of the mechanical, carried us from the world of sequence and connections into the world of creative configurations and structure.

John Sayles
Innovating something that is familiar. That’s the general approach, and that’s what I want to do with the melody as well. It should ring true – you should like every melody sequence without knowing what’s happening next.
Kelela
We don’t attempt to have any theme for a number of the anthology, or to have any particular sequence. We just put in things that we like, and then we try to alternate the prose and the poetry.
James Laughlin
Working on a film, the setup for an action sequence takes a long time, and we need to shoot the scene many times to get different angles.
Jet Li
I’ve been kind of listening to the composer Britten and his rendition of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ The opening track is a choral section where all the weird fairies, who are played by kids in the production, sing. It’s a crazy opening melody and chord sequence – really amazing.
Dev Hynes
For action to work, you need an awful lot of coverage. Because if you do a fight sequence, you really need to be able to creed the energy in the edit or augment the energy in the edit. So you need to really, really cover it.

In terms of their basic biochemical design….no living system can be thought of as being primitive or ancestral with respect to any other system, nor is there the slightest empirical hint of an evolutionary sequence among all the incredibly diverse cells on earth.

A comparison between the triplets tentatively deduced by these methods with the changes in amino acid sequence produced by mutation shows a fair measure of agreement.
Francis Crick
The structures of the WTO need to be reformed to increase participation. There must be a greater sense of shared ownership of the substance of the trade negotiation agenda. Decisions about issues to be negotiated, and in which sequence they should be taken, should rest with all WTO members, not only the most powerful.
Mary Robinson
The miracle of the American experiment was not the result of a natural sequence of events. An exceptionally virtuous and educated cadre of statesmen broke away from the politics of millennia and created something new. Only by this political miracle do Americans enjoy our freedoms.

Everything is a tale, Martin. What we believe, what we know, what we remember, even what we dream. Everything is a story, a narrative, a sequence of events with characters communicating an emotional content. We only accept as true what can be narrated.

Rid of craving and without clinging, an expert in the study of texts, and understanding the right sequence of the words, he may indeed be called “In his last body”, “Great in wisdom” and a “Great man.”
Gautama Buddha
I was given life because it was my time, and now I take leave of it according to the same law. Content with the natural sequence of these events, I am touched neither by joy nor by grief. I am simply hanging in the air … incapable of freeing myself, tied by the threads of things.
Zhuangzi

Bill Kraus
I always work from outline and almost always write out of sequence. It just works for me.
Paul S. Kemp
I never liked the extended cut personally because I like…we spend a lot of time figuring out our final cut. We test and test and test it, whatnot. Having said that, there’s one sequence we’re adding back into the movie for the extended cut that is pretty amazing that I think people are going to love.
Nicholas Stoller
In the sequence where I am burned at the stake, everything was so casual and hazardous that the bottom of my dress caught fire, and the grips became hysterical as they tried to pull me off the stake.
Barbara Steele
[Abdellatif LaГўbi] was a poet and worked as a high school teacher; and although he hadn’t broken any laws, the Moroccan government was determined to “gag” him – I use the term specifically since one of my favorite sequences of his is entitled “The Poem Beneath The Gag.”
Andre Naffis-Sahely
Dr. Roboy, in Litvak’s measured view, had a vice common to believers: He was all strategy and no tactics. He was prone to move for the sake of moving, too focused on the goal to bother with the intervening sequence.
Michael Chabon
To engage a sequence, we keep in mind the photographs on either side of the one in our eye.
Minor White
In a way, the whole notion of a blueprint of a building is not that different from a script for a movie. A sequence of spaces, which is what you do as an architect, is really the same as a sequence of scenes.
Susanne Bier
I’ve had many students over the years, sometimes even very sophisticated students, who will be writing and will hit a wall. Often I find it’s because they’re working out of sequence. Maybe some people can do that, but I don’t think that’s how fiction works. It’s a discovery.
