I like interacting with human beings, so being on stage feels like a larger version of that – kind of like throwing a party.
Eventually I would like to reach the stage where I don’t have to write about love and kisses and all that stuff. I wish I could write about really ultimate things. To me, music shouldn’t be ego-driven. When you go out on stage and play songs, it is. But when you’re sitting in a room, writing songs, it’s a completely different process. It’s a completely different place. It’s a creative place, a musical place. It has nothing to do with who likes what.
So in Jewry we recognise a contemporary universal anti-social phenomenon, which has reached its present pitch through a process of, historical development in which the Jews have zealously co-operated. In a war you have to take up arms and people will get killed, and I can support that kind of action by petrol bombing and bombs under cars, and probably at a later stage, the shooting of vivisectors on their doorsteps. It’s a war, and there’s no other way you can stop vivisectors.

Stage is much more intimidating than going before the cameras, because you can really screw up, and can’t do a retake.

I lost my innocence with Johnny Cash. I used to watch the Johnny Cash Show on television in Wangaratta when I was about 9 or 10 years old. At that stage I had really no idea about rock’n’roll. I watched him and from that point I saw that music could be an evil thing, a beautiful, evil thing.
Producing and deejaying are two different outlets to the same creativity. When I’m in the studio I get to create and go through my process. I think, ultimately you know in your heart how much work you’ve done. You know what you’re doing, if you’re being honest on stage or not. That’s all you being you. But when you acknowledges it – especially with a Tony Award nomination – you just can’t help with the guilty pleasure!

I think the motion picture industry is a stupid business and I despise acting the scenes in short snatches, one at a time. I hate this film work. I am disgusted with myself. On the stage I could never play a part unless I felt it with all my heart and soul.
The whole idea of comedy, there is nothing normal about going up on stage to make strangers laugh. But I’m also not an exhibitionist like other comics. I’m not up there talking about masturbating.
I think that there are a lot of great studio people but the fewer voices in my head when I’m getting out a draft, the better. I just get it out and then I’ll listen to all manner of good ideas. And that’s what happens, too, when I’m touring and doing a character on stage.
At this early stage in our evolution, now through our infancy and into our childhood and then, with luck, our growing up, what our species needs most of all, right now, is simply a future.

When I would be on the stage singing, I would see a movie of something that happened, I would be telling the story. I would be describing the story in sound, but my goal would be to make somebody else run their own movie.

In the early stages of a pregnancy, the Government cannot intervene with a woman’s right to choose. That is it, plain and simple. Guess what. We are not going to be big brother or sister, as the case may be. We are going to allow a woman, her doctor, and her God to make that decision.

I’m a bit of a contrarian, so I like the idea of going on stage without makeup, without the hair being done, in the jeans and shirt I’ve been wearing all day. At first that was an issue, because I didn’t want to be disrespectful.
I liked that improv and sketch comedy were collaborative, but you really depended on other people and a stage to perform. With stand-up comedy, I liked that you had no one else to blame and depend on.

Three of the most positive, transformative things that ever happened to me. They helped me become a vastly better person than I ever was, and I am eternally grateful for that.
I always like to break out and address the audience. In ‘The History Boys’, for instance, without any ado, the boys will suddenly turn and talk to the audience and then go back into the action. I find it more adventurous doing it in prose than on the stage, but I like being able to make the reader suddenly sit up.
I love being on stage or in front of the camera. My work brings me a lot of joy. It helps me figure out who I am. I’m really lucky that I get to make a living at acting.

I’ve had a chance to really stretch and do a lot of different genres. I wanted to go to drama school, but when I got the part in ‘Falling,’ I got an agent, so it seemed a good idea to work. I always did a lot of singing and dancing, so I am glad it worked out that way. I would like to study stage acting at some point, though.

Let the things that happen on the stage be just as complex and yet just as simple as they are in life. For instance, people are having a meal, just having a meal, but at the same time their happiness is being created, or their lives are being smashed up.
All the world’s a stage. P.T. Barnum: It becomes a circus. But circuses or street pageants or parades have always been useful in a society. They’ve always been useful as a way of critiquing power. The carnivalesque has always been useful as a way of the powerful being mocked in a public space.
Before I went on stage at Kyle Hutton’s Real Life Real Music Festival, I heard one of his songwriting students, Abbey Hirvela, sing; she was in the poet’s saddle and riding that horse like she owned it. When I attack a role, be it TV, film or stage, the first thing I say is, I don’t want to know anything. If it’s good I don’t want to hear it; if it’s bad I don’t want to hear it. The only thing either thing can do is distract me. I like to stay focused
When I’m on stage, it’s really intense. My mind is going a million miles an hour, trying to remember my act, trying to say it all the right way. It’s funny how different it looks and how it’s happening. There are three Fellini circuses in my head, and outwardly it looks like I’m going to get a bagel.
I’m an actor. Whether I’m on stage, in front of a camera or a microphone, what I do is the same – although with videogames it requires a lot of imagination.

There’s a feeling of elation that comes after getting off stage and then there’s a feeling of utter sadness that comes after getting off the stage.

In my theater pieces, I would do “Tits on the Head” – Polaroid photos for $10 on the stage. There would be a line of folks paying me $10 for their turn. It was public prostitution.
